Your guide to studying in France
Featuring world-class education and a colorful lifestyle commonly referred to as “joie de vivre”, France is one of the most preferred destinations for international MBA students. French universities and grandes écoles (elite French institutions of higher education) offer programs that are intensive yet rewarding, with diverse specializations in fields such as business, engineering, and the arts. Everyone admires the country’s rich cultural heritage and world-class cuisine, but each region is unique, making tourists and MBA students spoilt for choice. Traveling to neighboring countries is fast and easy, expanding opportunities for business partnerships.
Cultural Specifics of France
Refined etiquette, politeness, and respect – these aspects are paramount to French culture, whether in daily, professional, or social interactions. Art, fashion, and culinary excellence also have their special place in France, where people believe life should be enjoyed and celebrated. Dining is an important part of the day rather than just a quick necessity and it is often spent socializing and relaxing. During social gatherings, guests may bring a small gift for the host, such as flowers or wine. When greeting, people go for a firm handshake or a light kiss on both cheeks.
In France, even conversation is considered a form of art and having intellectual and well-articulated discussions comes naturally to people.
Business Culture in France
The corporate culture in France is often hierarchical and the management style follows a top-down approach.[ZL1] Although people value organizational structures and ranks, they do not shy away from engaging in passionate, well-mannered arguments with colleagues and peers. It can take time for internationals to get used to the direct and honest communication practiced by the French, but maintaining proper eye contact when speaking can help signal respect and genuine interest. While punctuality is important in French culture, being a few minutes late is acceptable.
The dress code depends on the specific industry environment, but it is typically formal, elegant, and well-fitted with minimal accessories.
